Statement of Purpose and Expectations for St. Mary School
At the Baptism of their child, Catholic parents make a sacred promise to raise their child in the knowledge and practice of the faith. To support parents in fulfilling this promise, parishes often establish schools that complement the guidance of parents and pastors.
A Catholic parish school exists to advance the Church’s mission of spreading knowledge and faith in God and His Son, Jesus Christ. At such a school, faith, culture, and life are brought into harmony. Through education, the parish nurtures students spiritually, academically, and morally, helping them develop a strong and virtuous foundation for life.
St. Mary School was founded and is supported by the St. Mary’s Church community in Sacramento to provide children of the parish with an education grounded in Catholic faith and practice. Research shows that children thrive when parents actively support their education and faith formation.
The primary purpose of St. Mary School is to provide a Catholic education to the children of St. Mary’s Parish. Families who are active, practicing members of the parish—attending Mass regularly, living according to Catholic teaching, supporting parish activities, and contributing to parish life—have priority in accessing the benefits of the school.
Catholic families from other parishes who are active and supportive may also be considered for admission, based on available openings and weighted criteria.

Respect and care are at the heart of St. Mary School. We provide a safe, loving, and supportive environment where every student is valued and encouraged to grow. Through our Community Service program, students learn to help those in need and give of themselves. In partnership with parents and families, we strive to educate the whole child.

Academic excellence is at the heart of a St. Mary School education. Students are challenged to reach their highest potential within a foundation of Christ’s love. In addition to core subjects like math, reading, and language arts, our curriculum includes music, science and technology, art, foreign language, history, and religious instruction. Our Resource Program supports accelerated learners and provides extra help for those who need it. Graduates leave well-prepared for continued success, with 98% attending Catholic high schools.

Faith and spiritual growth are woven throughout the St. Mary School experience. Students learn to see Christ in their lives and apply Gospel teachings in their actions. They prepare for the sacraments, attend weekly Mass, and explore their Catholic heritage and culture. Our students are guided to embrace Christian values and cultivate a personal awareness of God’s presence in their daily lives.
